Sleep Disorders program

Overview

The Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine at Wayne State University School of Medicine is committed to advancing sleep health through expert clinical care, innovative research, and rigorous education. As part of our academic mission, we lead comprehensive sleep medicine services in collaboration with our clinical partners, the Detroit Medical Center (DMC) and the John D. Dingell Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC).

Clinical services at the Detroit Medical Center and VA Medical Center

Our sleep medicine program delivers patient-centered care for a full range of sleep disorders, including:

  • Insomnia
  • Obstructive and central sleep apnea
  • Narcolepsy
  • Restless legs syndrome
  • Circadian rhythm disorders

Care is provided through the Detroit Medical Sleep Center at the DMC and the Sleep Disorders Program at the John D. Dingell VAMC, where patients benefit from a multidisciplinary team of board-certified sleep specialists, state-of-the-art technology, and access to both home sleep testing and in-lab diagnostic sleep studies.

The Detroit Medical Sleep Center features an 8-bed sleep laboratory accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM). The VAMC sleep program also offers full diagnostic capabilities and longitudinal care for veterans with sleep-related conditions.

Academic excellence and training

As an academic division within Wayne State University School of Medicine, we are deeply invested in training the next generation of sleep medicine physicians. Our fellowship program integrates hands-on clinical experience with exposure to complex sleep conditions across both the DMC and the VAMC, providing care in two distinct and diverse patient populations.

Research and innovation

The division conducts cutting-edge sleep research through both the DMC and the VAMC, with a focus on advancing diagnostics, developing novel therapies, and improving clinical outcomes for patients with sleep disorders. Faculty lead ongoing clinical trials and NIH-funded studies, contributing to the national body of knowledge in sleep medicine while mentoring trainees in research methodology and scholarly activity.
