My first experience with Detroit Medical Center Pulmonary and Critical Department was during my elective in residency. I remembered each day and cherished every moment. Working as a resident on the pulmonary consult service provided me a good over view of pulmonary medicine here. The extensive pathology and clinical experience is unsurpassable. After my rotation, I knew that this was the place I wanted to be.
Life as a fellow was even more exciting. The ICU calls at both hospitals taught us to maintain perfect balance between patience and aggressiveness, confidence, and assertiveness. Each day in ICU has something different to teach. The vast variety of cases definitely makes us feel confident in the mirage of clinical situations. The attending staff in the department is always a phone call away. The autonomy with constant supervision makes us feel in command and has bolstered the confidence over the 3 years.
The option of attending national conferences like ATS, ACCP and SCCM is a definite plus. The department always encourages participation and attendance of these conferences. These conferences have helped us broaden the horizon. Not limiting the education here, the department also holds simulation exercises, which has also enriched our learning experience.
Our program provides a warm, healthy, rich educational experience that is a melting pot of cultures from all over the world promoting excellence in art of medicine. I feel extremely fortunate and prepared to be a physician, teacher, leader and role model that DMC has taught me to be.
