Cystic fibrosis, bronchiectasis and mycobacterial diseases program
Founded in 1990 by Dr. Dana Kissner, the Adult Cystic Fibrosis Program at Wayne State University/Harper University Hospital is accredited by the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and is the only center of its kind in the metro Detroit area. Our mission is to provide state-of-the-art care for individuals living with cystic fibrosis and their families while leading in research, education, and community engagement. Additionally, we aim to educate future Cystic Fibrosis providers by training WSU medical residents and pulmonary fellows in our clinic and in conducting research and clinical trials. Our center collaborates with multiple subspecialties with expertise in cystic fibrosis to offer a multidisciplinary approach to care. Our core team includes physicians, nurses, a pharmacist, a social worker, a dietitian, respiratory therapists, and research coordinators.
Moreover, we maintain a strong partnership with the Pediatric Cystic Fibrosis Center at the Children’s Hospital of Michigan, which facilitates a smooth transition for individuals with CF when they are ready to move to the adult center.

Outpatient care/clinic Visits
The Adult CF Clinic meets every Monday, Thursday, & Friday. The clinic is in Harper University Hospital on the 8th floor within the Detroit Medical Center Lung Institute. During your clinic appointments, you will meet with a physician, nurse, pharmacist, respiratory therapist, dietitian, and social worker. You will undergo pulmonary function tests to assess your lung function and monitor the effectiveness of your treatment, as recommended by the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Additionally, the CF nurses will collect blood samples and sputum cultures during your visit to streamline the process.
To schedule an appointment, please call 313-745-9151 or Fax 313-745-7414.
Inpatient care
If you are feeling ill and need to be admitted to the hospital, please call the CF nurse at the pulmonary clinic at 313-745-9151. This will allow for a direct admission to the medical floor at Harper University Hospital, enabling you to bypass the Emergency Department.
If you need to seek care after hours or on weekends, please go to the Harper University Hospital Emergency Department and ask them to contact the CF physician on call. If your situation is urgent and you are unable to travel to Harper University Hospital, please visit the nearest emergency room and have the treating physician call the CF nurse or physician for assistance.
People with cystic fibrosis requiring admission will be placed in a private room on the 6Brush medical unit at Harper University Hospital. This floor is designated for general medical care and has nurses with specialized training in the care of individuals with CF. During your inpatient stay, a member of the CF team along with the pulmonary teaching service will see you daily. Subspecialty physicians with expertise in cystic fibrosis are available for consultation if necessary.
Infectious control protocols
During your clinic visits or hospital admissions, strict infection control guidelines will be followed as recommended by the Cystic Fibrosis (CF) Foundation. To limit the spread of infections, we do not keep individuals with cystic fibrosis in the waiting room; instead, we will take you directly to the examination room where you will meet your healthcare providers. All healthcare providers and hospital staff will sanitize their hands and wear masks, protective gowns, and gloves when interacting with you. This protective gear is intended to safeguard you from potential infections.
Research
Our Adult Center is part of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s Therapeutic Development network, which focuses on clinical studies specific to cystic fibrosis. Through this network, our CF center has contributed to numerous clinical breakthroughs in the treatment of cystic fibrosis. As research continues in developing new therapies, our ultimate goal remains to find a cure.
Our center has three dedicated research coordinators with years of clinical experience in treating people with cystic fibrosis. This enables us to conduct joint clinic and clinical trial appointments simultaneously, allowing us to streamline the process and save time for our patients.
If you are interested in participating in a clinical trial, please talk to your CF provider. Additionally, you can find ongoing clinical trials in cystic fibrosis at https://apps.cff.org/trials/finder/
