Sleep Medicine Fellowship

Goals of the Program

  • Expansion of the Fellow’s fund of knowledge of Sleep Medicine including clinical presentation, diagnosis and management of common pulmonary disorders in outpatients and hospitalized patients.
  • Ability to gather and organize the data necessary to generate a problem-oriented differential diagnosis and plan of management.
  • Develop ability to be an effective consultant in sleep medicine with the ability to work cooperatively with other consultants for optimal patient care.
  • Develop the ability to accurately score and interpret sleep studies including diagnostic polysomnography, positive pressure titration polysomnography, multiple sleep latency tests and maintenance of wakefulness tests.
  • Develop the ability to be an effective leader of the multidisciplinary sleep team.
  • Develop the communication skills and caring attitude necessary to effectively interact with patients and families.

Program Experience

  • The Sleep Fellowship is a one-year program encompassing both clinical experience and research.
  • Fellows will spend six months rotating at Harper University Hospital/University Health Center and six months at the John D. Dingell VAMC. Fellows also spend 12 weeks attending a pediatric sleep clinic at the Children’s Hospital of Michigan.
  • Fellows are responsible for the primary reading/interpreting of all sleep studies, encompassing diagnotic polysomnograpy, positive pressure titration studies and multiple sleep latency tests. Fellows individually read over 200 sleep studies during the course of the program.
